The Ministry of Health has clarified that Covid-related deaths in Sri Lanka are reported based on two main categories.

Chief Epidemiologist of the Ministry Dr. Sudath Samaraweera told NewsWire that the two categories are termed as directly Covid-related deaths and indirectly Covid-related deaths.

Directly Covid-related deaths are pertaining to coronavirus confirmed patients who die while being treated for the virus at a hospital.

Meanwhile, the indirectly Covid-related deaths is when a person who has died due to other reasons, such as accidents or suicide, is confirmed as having contracted the virus following PCR tests conducted during the post mortem examination, he explained.

Dr. Sudath Samaraweera clarified this to NewsWire, after questions were raised on social media pertaining to the 22nd Covid-related death that was recorded in Sri Lanka today.
A 27-year-old man from Panadura who had attempted suicide had died after being admitted to the Panadura Hospital on Friday (30).

The victim was recorded as the 22nd Covid-related death in Sri Lanka, after PCR tests conducted during the post mortem examination had confirmed that he had contracted the virus. (NewsWire)
