A low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal which has developed into a depression, 370 km away from Trincomalee is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm named Nivar within the next 48 hours.
The Meteorology Department warned that although the cyclone may make landfall in Tamil Nadu coast, those living in the North and East belt should take necessary precautions.
“Under the influence of this system, very strong winds of 60-70kmph can be expected in the Eastern, Northern and North-central provinces,” the Department warned in a weather advisory adding that the public is warned to take necessary precautions.
The department warned that intermittent showers/thundershowers, strong, forceful strong gusty winds and rough seas can be expected for the next few days. “Intermittent showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea area extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Mannar, Kankesanthurai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa.”
Fishermen have been advised not to venture to the sea as the approaching depression will increase the wind speed, especially in the coastal areas. Indian media reports that on November 25, when the cyclonic storm is expected to make the landfall, the wind speed is expected to go up to 80-90 Kmph gusting 100 Kmph from the current 40-50 Kmph in parts of Tamil Nadu.
