The Cyclonic Storm “NIVAR” over southwest Bay of Bengal is intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and located near (10.1N, 82.1E) at 2330hrs yesterday (24), 230km to the east of Kankasanthurai coast, stated the Department of Meteorology.
It is very likely to intensify into a very Severe Cyclonic Storm and expected to move northwestwards and cross Tamil-Nadu coast, India during next 24hours.
Under the influence of this system, very strong gusty winds (60-80)kmph can be expected in Northern, Eastern and North-Central provinces. Strong gusty winds (40-50)kmph can be expected elsewhere.
Cloudy skies can be expected over Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Western provinces.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern and North-Central provinces and Puttalam district. Fairly heavy falls above 75mm are likely at some places.
Showers will occur at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Kurunegala and Galle districts.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva province after 2.00 p.m.
