Kandy Mayor Kesara Senanayake says that several staffers of the Solid Waste Management Unit of the Kandy Municipal Council (MC) have been infected with the COVID-19 virus which has disrupted the daily garbage collection within the city.
He said that the vast majority of the city council's garbage disposal workers live in the Mahaiyawa area of Kandy and 11 individuals from the area have been diagnosed with COVID-19.
The Mayor made this statement at a media briefing held at the Kandy Municipal Council yesterday (25).
He said that in the current situation, a large number of employees engaged in garbage disposal activities have not been called to work and as a result, the daily garbage collection has been hampered.
Senanayake said that the Municipal Council expects the support of the people at this critical juncture so that garbage disposal is not done unnecessarily.
