The Akkaraipattu Police area was isolated yesterday until further notice after 10 people tested positive for COVID-19 out of 20 persons who were subjected to the random PCR tests at the Akkaraipattu Market.
Schools in Akkaraipattu were closed. The fish market and the vegetable stalls were also closed. Thereafter, vegetable stalls and other shops along the Main Street were also closed. The public were asked not to gather on roads and at public places. The Government Offices, Corporations and other public institutions remained opened for limited hours.
A medical Team headed by Regional Director of Health Services of Kalmunai Dr. G. Sugunan along with Micro Biologist of Batticaloa Dr. Vithegi assisted in conducting PCR tests on 250 persons in and around the market. RDHS Sugunan asked for full cooperation of the officials and the public to control the situation at a press briefing at the Akkatraipattu MOH Office Auditorium. The persons in the isolated area are not allowed to come out for any reason other than an essential need or service, RDHS Dr. Sugunan said.
Akkaraipattu Mayor Athaullah Ahamed Zacky, Army Commanding Officer-241 Brigade Lt. Colonel Janaka Wimlaratna, MOH Dr. Faroosa and her Staff participated in the press briefing.
Security has been tightened in the area.
