New buses to ease City traffic

The Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal made by Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge to purchase 200 new low floor buses for the Sri Lanka Transport Board, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila said.

He was addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing at the Government Information Department yesterday.

The Minister said the State Ministry of Bus Transport Services will launch a public transport  service with modern facilities in Colombo and suburbs with parking facilities as a solution to the heavy traffic congestion and higher demand for parking space within the Colombo city and suburbs. “For this purpose, it has been identified the need to purchase 200 buses suitable for short distance travel which are more comfortable and suitable for short distance running than the existing buses,” he added.
