The Government has taken steps to bring back stranded Sri Lankans in Kuwait who are being housed in a temporary detention facility and a centre run by the Sri Lankan Embassy there.
Accordingly, the first batch of 100 workers had returned to Sri Lanka by Kuwait Jazeera Airways on Monday.
The repatriation process was initiated based on the request made by both Ministers Namal Rajapaksa and Prasanna Ranatunga from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Accordingly, 148 Sri Lankans at the detention centres in Kuwait, 160 Sri Lankans at immigration detention centres and another 250 Sri Lankans detained at a Police station for various reasons.
Ministers Rajapaksa and Ranatunga had intervened to seek the repatriation of Sri Lankans in Kuwait on the request made by the SLPP branch in Kuwait.
Around 6,000 Sri Lankans have registered with the Embassy to return to Sri Lanka and 3,221 of them have already returned to the country.
So far, around 80,000 Sri Lankan migrant workers have been repatriated from a number of countries.
