Student attacked at examination hall

A student who sat for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination at a leading school in Galle has been admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital after being assaulted by a group of students from the same school yesterday, Galle Police said.

The student who has been admitted to the hospital is W.R Helandu Nethmika.

The student and his parents had complained to the Galle Police that another group of students from the same college who had come to answer the GCE Ordinary Level examination had beaten the student with clubs. They have further stated to the police that later after the first assault, another three students had come and assaulted him while he was sitting in the hall until the examination commencedTeachers and other students in the examination hall also had witnessed the incident.

A group of students known as the “school gang of nine” had assaulted the student.

Thereafter the student had gone home after the examination that day and got ready for the rest of the examination. However when he went to see a specialist due to persistent ear pain, the doctor had advised him to be admitted to the hospital immediately. Accordingly, the student who went to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital has been admitted to the Accident Ward.

The examination center has not yet conducted any investigation into the assault incident complaint lodged with the police.

According to the Examinations Act No. 25 of 1968, the Ministry of Education has instructed the Heads of Examination Halls to cancel the results of the examinations if the candidates are engaged in riotous activities, disturbing other students and damaging public property at or on the examination center premises.

On inquiry the Galle Police stated that an investigation is being carried out into the incident.
