Many shortcomings in Govt’s online education plans - Akila

Former Education Minister and Deputy Leader of the United National Party Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that the Government has failed to formulate a programme to provide formal education to schoolchildren whose education has been disrupted for a year and a half. Speaking to the media in Kuliyapitiya yesterday (25), Kariyawasam said teachers have been told to provide online education to students. “But some teachers do not have a tab or even a phone for that matter.

So how can they provide online education for students,” Kariyawasam asked.

He said some teachers have no data or Wi-Fi facilities. “Some places have no signal. Therefore, these facilities should be provided to teachers. We requested the Government to talk to a telecom company or a private telephone company and prepare a programme to provide Wi-Fi in a concessionary manner to schoolchildren. After a year and a half this Government has not been able to provide cellular or Wi-Fi facilities to areas where there are no signals,” he added.
