Despite the intense (mis-) information warfare launched by the Taliban in Afghanistan, claiming that Northern Alliance based out of its Panjshir Valley stronghold has surrendered, so as to mislead global, regional powers and spread consternation among the Afghan national resistance gathered under the aegis of Ahmad Massoud, French philosopher Bernard-Henri levy has come out to claim otherwise.
He took to Twitter to say that these claims of the Taliban were “fake”. “News saying @ahmadmassoud01 surrenders to the #Taliban in #Panjshir are fake. See my conversation with him. Front page of @repubblica. Soon other world press. #Massoud, son of national hero #AhmadShahMassoud, is the new #LionOfPanjshir. “Surrender is not in my dictionary”, he says.
Yesterday too Levi had tweeted about his conversation with Massoud on the phone. He had quoted Massoud as saying that he would never surrender.
“He told me: “I am the son of Ahmad Shah Massoud; surrender is not part of my vocabulary.” This is the start. The resistance has just begun,” levy had written in his tweet.
Massoud is the son of much-celebrated Ahmad Shah Massoud, who led the fiercest resistance against the Taliban in their earlier innings in Afghanistan. He too had led the resistance from his stronghold in the Panjshir Valley and had earned the epithet of ‘Lion of Panjshir’. Massoud senior had been assassinated by Al-Qaeda terrorists of Moroccan origin just two days before 9/11.
Interestingly, Panjshir carries the hopes of the Afghan resistance even this time around as neither Taliban nor, before it, Russia was able to capture the area.
Amrullah Saleh, who had declared himself the caretaker President of Afghanistan after the flight of President Ashraf Ghani immediately after the Taliban took control of Kabul, is already in Panjshir Valley aligned with Ahmad Massoud.
According to latest reports, the Taliban suffered huge casualties as it mounted an offensive to take back the Panjshir Valley. The Taliban, reportedly, have been driven away from Panjshir.
