Tamil National Alliance Leader R. Sampanthan yesterday said that since the COVID-19 pandemic in the country is temporary, work towards compiling a new Constitution, which is a long-term requirement, should not be delayed.
Making a statement, the Parliamentarian said that he has written to both the President and the Prime Minister requesting an Emergency Meeting in order to hold lengthy discussions regarding this matter.
Although every Government that came into power since 1988 when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was adopted had promised to add a new Amendment to the Constitution and pledged to provide a solution to the North-East problem, no Government had taken any forward steps in relation to it, the TNA Leader said.
Subsequent to the 1972 and 1978 Constitutions being adopted, during a period of less than two years all matters stated in those Constitutions were fulfilled, but Sampanthan said that it is regrettable that nothing at all was done regarding the 13 Amendment to the Constitution although more than 32 years have lapsed.
He said that although the COVID-19 pandemic has created a dangerous situation in the country, the pandemic should not be considered as a hindrance to making political decisions in the country. He also said that he has yet to receive any response to the letter he wrote to the President and the Prime Minister requesting an Emergency Meeting.
