Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded India’s Olympic contingent, saying their performance in the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics has encouraged the country’s youth.
Olympic players were present at the Red Fort during the Independence Day celebrations. Prime Minister Modi, along with those present at the Red Fort, applauded the contingent that participated in the recently held Olympic Games in Tokyo. At the conclusion of the speech, he greeted the Olympic athletes.
“The athletes who have made us proud at the Tokyo Olympics are here with us today. I urge the nation to appreciate his achievement today. He has not only won our hearts but has also done a great job of inspiring the generations to come,”
PM Modi said.
During the 75th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, 32 players including javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, shuttler PV Sindhu and two Sports Authority of India (SAI) officials were present during the 75th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. During this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the national flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort and gave a traditional address to the nation.
Ahead of the ceremony, Neeraj Chopra said that it is a new experience for him as he used to watch the ceremony on TV and now he is attending it in person.
“Earlier we used to watch the flag hoisting ceremony on TV and now we are going there personally. This is a new experience. We had not won a gold medal in individual sports for so long. I love that the country felt proud because of me,”
Neeraj Chopra said.
Around 240 Olympians, support staff and officials of SAI and sports federations were also invited to grace the Gyan Path in front of the ramparts. India posted its best ever performance at the Tokyo Olympics by winning a total of seven medals – one gold, two silver and four bronze.
Earlier on Saturday, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, hosted the Indian contingent of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Center over tea. The Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu was also present on the occasion.
