New Delhi:
There was a time when the Lal Chowk in Srinagar was the a symbol of the Pakistan sponsored terrorist movement in Kashmir. It was this same Lal Chowk where a defiant Jan Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee raised the flag of independent India before being arrested and eventually dying in police custody.
But today the situation has changed completely. The clock tower at
Lal Chowk
is bathed with tricolor coloured light before the 75th
Independence Day
on
August
15, 2021.
Many changes have taken place in Kashmir since hordes of mujahideen crossed the then porous Line of Control (LoC) into Jammu and Kashmir.
While the terrorist movement has been effectively defeated by the Indian Army along with the BSF, CRPF and the local Jammu and Kashmir Police, the current central government led by PM Modi has effected far reaching constitutional changes.
Since the removal of Article 370 and Article 35A from Jammu and Kashmir, the former state, which has now been divided into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh – has been legally frimly incorporated into the Republic of India.
There was a time when the
hoisting of the Indian tricolor at the Lal Chowk in Srinagar
used to be seen as a controversial act.
It was in 1992 when
Murli Manohar Joshi
the then national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Narendra Modi hoisted the Indian tricolor
at the Lal Chowk in Srinagar
. At that time Narendra Modi was the convener of the Tiranga Yatra. Some people are also sharing this picture from 1992 on social media.
But there has been a seas change in the situation since then.
BJP’s Tejinder Bagga, while sharing the picture of Lal Chowk, wrote that while some political leaders of Kashmir used to say that they will not allow the Indian tricolor to be hoisted at the Lal Chowk in Srinagar, PM Modi has transformed
Lal Chowk
into the tricolor.
