Police have launched an investigation into a voice cut being circulated in social media on the handling of the COVID situation claiming to be by Prof. Malik Peiris, who is a Sri Lankan pathologist and virologist based in Hong Kong. However, Professor Peiris has denied posting such a voice cut and has requested the police to conduct an investigation into a voice cut being circulated on social media.
Police Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said, “A voice cut said to be that of Prof.Malik Peiris, who is a Hong Kong based pathologist and virologist, has been circulating on social media over Sri Lanka’s Covid situation.
The voice cut creates a fake detail on how the Sri Lankan health authorities have handled the Covid situation in the country. Accordingly, we have launched an investigation regarding those responsible for this voice cut and legal action will be taken against them.”
Prof.Peiris, is a Sri Lankan pathologist and virologist. He has long been based in Hong Kong. His research interests include ecology, evolution, pathogenesis, epidemiology of animal-human influenza and other human respiratory viral infections, authoring over 320 research publications.
Prof.Peiris has said he had no connection with this voice cut and had therefore, wanted the police to investigate it and uncover who was behind this incident.
