Rs.100 million for SP Solid Waste Management Centres

Rs.100 million has been received to increase the production capacity of Solid Waste Management Centres run by Local Government Institutions in the Southern Province, Southern Province Local Government Commissioner Senaka Palliyaguruge said.

The money will be used to provide infrastructure and to purchase equipment required to increase the production capacity of organic fertilizer at these Solid Waste Management Centres. Currently, 25 Solid Waste Management Centres are operated throughout the province by the respective Local Government bodies and they all will be provided with additional building facilities and machinery for expanding their production capacity, the Local Government Commissioner stated.

At present these Solid Waste Management Centres produce 17 tons of organic fertilizer daily. It is planned to increase the volume of organic fertilizer produced daily up to 25 tons by making organic fertilizer production more efficient, he added.

The Commissioner further stated that he briefed on the problems of the Solid Waste Management Centres at a meeting chaired by the Secretary to the President and the funds were allocated following special intervention of the Southern Province Governor Dr. Willie Gamage.
