Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday expressed deep concern over the violation of the Opposition Leader’s Parliamentary Privileges by the authorities when the Police obstructed him from entering the Colombo Harbour Police Station to see the 44 teachers and principals who were detained following a demonstration conducted by them opposite the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday.
The teachers and principals commenced their demonstration campaign nearly three weeks ago demanding the Government to resolve their salary anomalies. Premadasa said as the Opposition Leader in the country the Police or any other authority should not obstruct him from visiting the detained persons in the Police custody since it is his duty to look into the welfare of people in the country whenever they face difficulties.
He said the Police should be held responsible for violating the Constitution and the privileges of the Opposition Leader enshrined in the Constitution.
