Opposition Leader and Samagi Jana Balawegaya Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday condemned the summoning of several newspaper Editors to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), adding that it was a threat to media freedom.
“It is a duty of the media to expose corruption and fraud in the country.The CID has no right to summon and question journalists for doing their duty.
Summoning them to the CID over their news reports is an insult to them. It is an undue threat to their media role,” he said.
The Opposition Leader said that his Party stands up for media freedom and believes that there should be no media censorship other than self-regulation. The Opposition Leader further said that the Lawyers’ Group of the SJB is ready to offer legal assistance to any journalist who requires such assistance.
