Rohit Sharma has posted several landmarks by scoring a century in the second innings of the Oval Test match against England. This was Rohit Sharma’s first Test century on foreign soil and it was the eighth century of his Test career.
When Rohit Sharma started his Test career, he was not an opener. He got this opportunity for the first time in 2019 against South Africa in Visakhapatnam. Since then, he has managed to score 5 centuries in 27 innings of his Test career.
Rohit Sharma broke Sehwag’s record
This was Rohit Sharma’s fifth century in Test cricket as an opener. He has scored eight centuries for India in Tests so far, of which five have been posted as an opener. He scored these five centuries as an opener in just 27 innings.
As a Test opener for India, he also became the 10th batsman to score 5 centuries in Test cricket. Rohit Sharma broke Virender Sehwag’s record for the fastest opening five centuries as an opener for India and came in second.
Virender Sehwag had scored his first five Test centuries for India as an opener in 30 innings, but Rohit did it in 27 innings, leaving Sehwag behind. Sunil Gavaskar holds the record for the fastest opening five centuries as an opener in Test cricket for India. Gavaskar achieved this feat in 24 innings.
