UK PM praises Pakistan’s 10 billion trees project

UN: United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson highlighted Pakistan’s 10 billion trees project during his speech at the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday. The UK PM asked everyone to follow the example of his Pakistan counterpart, Imran Khan.

‘10 Billion Trees Tsunami’, which is also known as ‘Plant for Pakistan’, is a five-year project to plant 10 billion trees across the country. The project, which was kicked off by PM Imran Khan in September 2018, is aimed at minimising the environmental losses and countering the impact of climate change.

Speaking about the Pakistani project, PM Boris Johnson said, “I invite everybody to follow the example of Imran Khan of Pakistan who has pledged to plant 10 billion trees.”

He also lauded China’s President Xi Jinping for his recent pledge to not build any new coal-fire project abroad, a move that could play a major role in tackling global emissions.

Meanwhile, the UK PM is set to host a major UN climate summit in Scotland in six weeks’ time. He used his speech at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday to underline the need to restrain global temperatures from rising and set tougher emissions-cutting targets.

Highlighting the threats of climate change, PM Boris Johnson said that it was “now or never” for the world to implement major changes to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

He also called the world leaders “to pledge collectively to achieve carbon neutrality net zero by the middle of the century.”

Setting the tone for November’s climate summit in Glasgow, PM Boris Johnson asked every country to reduce carbon emission “substantially” by the end of the decade. He said that by 2040, only zero-emission vehicles should be on sale across the world.- INDIA TODAY
