225 Police officers promoted to ASP rank

Commenting on the promotion of 225 Chief Inspectors to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) yesterday, Public Security Minister Rear Admiral Dr. Sarath Weerasekara said that Police Chief Inspectors (CI) had not been promoted since 2014.

Therefore, he noted that the President had advised them to put an end to the frustration of these Police officers as soon as possible.

“Accordingly, we were able to calculate all the vacancies and award promotions to 230. In addition, another 46 persons with degrees within the Police were given the opportunity to sit for an exam and they were given the posts of Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP).”

Weerasekara said that granting such promotions will have a commensurate effect on the ranks below them as well.“We had a severe shortage of ASPs. Normally, an Assistant Superintendent of Police has to supervise three Police stations. Due to the prevailing situation, some ASPs had to monitor eight or nine Police stations. With such a large number being promoted as Assistant Superintendents of Police, we can now easily supervise 560 Police stations effectively, he said, adding that through that he hopes to increase the efficiency of the Police as getting e promotions will boost their morale.
