Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla called on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat today.
President Rajapaksa stressed the need to revitalise the friendship and bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and India as in the 1960s and 70s.
Commenting on the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, the President said that its strengths and weaknesses must be identified. Observing that his expectation is to make the suitable background in the country for the return of Tamils who left the country, the President pointed out that he, at the United Nations in New York, openly invited the Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora to support the Government’s endeavours in that regard.
The President emphasized that he would not let Sri Lanka be used for any activity that may threaten the security of India. Explaining Sri Lanka’s relations with China, the President requested the Indian Foreign Secretary not to harbour any doubts on that.
Commenting on the Trincomalee Oil Tank Farm, the President said the subject Minister has been entrusted with the responsibility of reaching a win-win situation on it.
Attention was also paid for power exchange between the two countries after identifying the peak hours. The President also informed the Indian Foreign Secretary that he will invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a State visit to Sri Lanka.
The President emphasized the importance of explaining the pros and cons of investments and other such endeavours to win the majority support of the people before proceeding on them.
