‘Around 750,000 people arrested for crimes, offenses annually’

On an average Police arrest around 750,000 individuals annually in connection with various crimes and offenses, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.

“The arrests are made mainly on charges of assault, murder, theft, rape, child abuse, underworld activities, on suspicion of various crimes and traffic law violations,” he said.

He said among the suspects were a large number of people who get arrested on more than one occasion for crimes. However, he said not everyone arrested by the Police is an offender and they are released on Police bail, produced before courts, and bailed or remanded for 14 days based on the nature of the complaint against them.
