Eppawala Police have arrested a 79-year-old suspect in connection with the theft of nearly 40 Moped motorcycles.
The police had seized six stolen motorcycles which were in his posession at the time of arrest.
Eppawala Police say that the arrested suspect is a 79 year old father of three living in the Minneriya Railway Station Junction area.
Police said that the suspect is a notorious criminal in the island and that he is currently on trial for stealing 17 motorcycles.
The suspect, who was sentenced to 16 years in prison, had escaped from prison and was in hiding at the time of arrest, police said.
The suspect had allegedly sold the stolen motorcycles to buyers in Medirigiriya, Hingurakgoda and Somawathiya areas for sums between Rs. 30,000 and 100,000.
