Around 12,000 people die annually due to accidents, Dr.Samitha Siritunga, a specialist in the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit of the Health Ministry said.
He said that about 1.3 million people are admitted to government hospitals for residential treatment due to accidents and about 12,000 people die annually.
He was speaking at a press conference organized by the Government Information Department on the 29th to educate the public on the dangers of accidents during the festive season.
“Accidents are most commonly reported during the festive season. Traffic accidents are the leading cause of accidents in the last few years. Although the number of traffic accidents due to the corona pandemic has decreased in 2020 and 2021, there has been an increase in domestic accidents”, the doctor said.
