Manipur gets first Omicron case, traveller from Tanzania found infected with new COVID-19 variant

Manipur has reported its first case of Omicron on Monday. A traveller from Tanzania has tested positive for the new variant of COVID-19.

Directorate of Health Services, Government of Manipur said, “SARSVOV 2 has been detected in an international passenger coming from Tanzania to the state. After testing positive for COVID-19 on RT-PCR on the eighth day of arrival in India, sample was sent for Whole Genome Sequencing to Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) Takyelpat.”

The Omicron patient is already on facility isolation in government hospital in Imphal, the state health department said.

The Manipur government has urged people of the state to adhere to COVID-19 appropriate behaviour and wear masks whenever stepping out of house. “Mask have been found effective against all variants of COVID-19,” the Manipur health ministry said.
