Union Minister Naqvi says women's constitutional rights should not be influenced by 'Talibani thinking'

New Delhi:

Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Saturday said that the “Talibani mentality” on women’s liberty, dignity, empowerment and constitutional equality will not be tolerated in India.

He was addressing the “Minorities Day Celebration” programme organised by the National Commission for Minorities, NCM here today.

“…Some statements surprise me. They say girls will turn rogue if married off at the age of 21. Why will they turn rogue? Don’t you trust them? Such mindset can only be ‘Talibani’, not ‘Hindustani’…,” Naqvi said.

“The constitutional rights of a woman, women empowerment, women’s respect in this country must not be influenced by ‘Talibani thinking’. This country is run by constitutional principles. There is a need for social empowerment along with educational empowerment for women. A lot of countries including the Islamic countries have brought changes in the marriage provisions to empower women,” he stated.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Union Cabinet cleared a proposal to raise the minimum age of marriage for women from 18 to 21. The government is likely to propose a bill in Parliament during the ongoing Winter Session of the Parliament.
