Bulli Bai app case: 21-year-old Bengaluru student arrested, main accused detained by Mumbai police

‘Bulli Bai’ app case:

A 21-year-old engineering student from Bengaluru has been arrested and a woman, main accused in the case, from Uttarakhand has been detained by Mumbai Police Cyber Cell Tuesday.

The case is against the Bulli Bai app in which Muslim women raising voices on political issues and having a number of followers on Twitter were put on an online ‘auction’.

On January 3, 2022, Mumbai Police detained the second-year engineering student Vishal Jha from Bengaluru. He was brought to Mumbai late on Monday evening and was quizzed. He was arrested on Tuesday.

Mumbai Police produced Vishal Jha at Mumbai’s Bandra court on Tuesday afternoon. The court has sent him to police custody till January 10.

The woman from Uttarakhand was detained today and police said both Jha and the lady know each other.

“The main accused woman was handling three accounts related to ‘Bulli Bai’ app. Co-accused Vishal Kumar opened an account by the name Khalsa supremacist. On December 31, 2021, he changed the names of other accounts to resemble Sikh names. Fake Khalsa account holders were shown,” Mumbai Police said.

The engineering student, police said, used his Twitter handle to share derogatory content from the Bulli Bai app. He was traced through the IP address of the Twitter accounts which were used to upload the pictures.

The incident came to fore on January 1, 2022, after several Muslim women found themselves on ‘auction’ on Bulli Bai app created by the GitHub. Renowned journalists, activists and lawyers were among those listed for ‘auction’ in the app. Some women have even filed criminal cases in Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Police said Jha had tried to mislead users by assuming non-Hindu identities. He had opened an account by the name, “Khalsa Supremist” and on December 31, he changed the names of other accounts to mirror Sikh names.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had on Sunday said the GitHub user behind the app had been blocked and “further action” was being coordinated.
