Delhi COVID-19 cases rising 'rapidly', but don't panic, hospitalisation is low: Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi:

Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal Sunday said COVID-19 cases in the capital are increasing “rapidly” but people should not panic and instead act responsibly as well as adhere to health protocols.

“COVID-19 cases are seeing a rapid surge in Delhi. There has been spike in the number of daily cases, but there is no need to panic. Currently, COVID-19 active cases in the national capital are 6,360. Three days ago, they were 2,191. Active cases have risen three times in the past three days,” the Chief Minister said.

He further informed, “On December 29, 2021, Delhi reported 923 cases. On the next day (December 30, 2021) the capital logged 1,313. December 31, 2021, saw 1,796 coronavirus cases. January 1, 2022, saw the national capital registering 2,796, a whopping rise of 1,000 cases,” Kejriwal said.

“The Delhi health bulletin that will be released today (Sunday) evening is expected to see 3,100. The daily cases are crossing 2,000 to 2,500-mark. Cases are rising rapidly,” the Delhi Chief Minister added.

Kejriwal further said only 82 oxygen beds in hospitals are occupied across Delhi. The national capital

is prepared with 37,000 oxygen beds, he added.

Kejriwal added that on Saturday (January 1, 2022), only 247 hospital beds were occupied. Till December 29, 2021, as many as 262 beds were occupied with COVID-19 patients. This shows there has been marginal drop in hospitalisation of COVID-19 patients.

“This indicates that maximum number of people who have been infected with COVID-19 are not required to be hospitalised. All are having mild symptoms or are asymptomatic,” Kejriwal said.

Delhi Saturday recorded a massive spike in COVID-19 infections with 2,716 new cases – highest since May 21 and a 51 per cent jump from a day ago. The national capital has so far logged 351 cases of Omicron of which 294 are still active and are undergoing treatment.
