Kejriwal asks Amit Shah to order Delhi Police to take strict action against assault on Shahdara 'gang-rape' survivor

Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday condemned the incident reported from in Shahdara where a 20-year-old was assaulted. He urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal to instruct the Delhi Police to take strict action against the culprits.

Kejriwal also requested the Home Minister and Delhi L-G to ask Delhi police to “pay attention” to law and order situation in the national capital.

In a tweet in Hindi, the Delhi Chief Minister wrote, “This is very shameful. How did the criminals get so courageous? I urge the Union Home Minister and the Lieutenant Governor to instruct the police to take strict action, pay attention to the law and order situation. Delhiites will not tolerate such heinous crime and criminals at any cost.”

On Wednesday (January 26), a 20-year-old

alleged rape surviour was kidnapped, her hair chopped off and paraded on the streets in Kasturba Nagar in Delhi’s Shahdara district. 

Delhi Police have arrested four accused in connection with the incident. District Commissioner of Police (DCP), Shahdara, R Sathiyasundaram the crime was suspected to be the result of the woman’s personal enmity with the accused. 

“An unfortunate incident of sexual assault on a woman due to personal enmity happened in Shahdara District. Four accused have been arrested and investigation is underway. All possible help and counselling are being provided to the victim,” R Sathiyasundaram added.

Delhi Women Commission (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal shared the video of the incident and claimed that woman was “gang raped by illicit liquor sellers, was made bald, they made her wear a garland of slippers and painted her face black.”

She even issued notice to Delhi Police and asked them to arrest all criminal men and women as well as provide security to the woman and her family should be provided security. 

As per reports, the assault was carried out by family members of a youth who stayed in the neighbourhood and committed suicide in November. The woman was followed by the youth and the family blamed her for his suicide. 

The woman’s younger sister informed the police, that the victim is married and has a child. 

The woman is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital and her condition is said to be stable.
