Odisha Sunday added 23 new cases of Omicron variant of COVID-19, taking the state’s tally to 37.
Niranjan Mishra, Director, Public Health of Odisha said, “23 new cases of Omicron detected in Odisha, the total number of cases with new variant has reached 37 in the state.”
The swab samples of all the COVID-19 patients were sent for genome sequencing at the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar and the reports of these 23 patients came positive for Omicron.
All the patients showed mild or no symptoms. They are currently isolated and are being treated.
Odisha reported first Omicron case on December 21, 2021 when two international travellers who arrived in the state from Nigeria and Qatar respectively had tested positive.
The state added two more cases of Omicron on December 23, 2021 and on December 30, 2021, five more were diagnosed with the new strain of COVID-19.
The data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) earlier today informed that India has, so far, reported 1,525 cases of Omicron, with Maharashtra and Delhi having the maximum number of cases.
Of the total, 965 cases are still active and are undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, witnessing spike in COVID-19 and Omicron cases, the Odisha government has postponed the reopening of schools in the state for classes 1 to 5. Earlier, the school were scheduled to open on January 3, 2022 (Monday).
As per the Odisha Health Department, the state has added 423 new COVID-19 cases and one death on Saturday. The state has now 2,078 active cases of coronavirus.
