Thiruvananthapuram:
At least 94 per cent of the Covid-19 positive samples which are being sent for the genome sequencing are testing positive for the Omicron variant of the virus, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said.
She added that a very few samples are coming positive for the Delta variant.
“Continuous sequencing of Covid-19 positive samples is being done. Almost 94 per cent of samples test positive for Omicron and 6 per cent for delta,” George said.
She further said, “It is now clear that the third wave in Kerala is the Omicron wave.”
The Kerala Health Minister informed that less than 4 per cent of the Covid-19 patients in the state have needed hospitalisation out of which less than 1 per cent were shifted to ICU or needed needed oxygen beds.
“Out of total positive cases in Kerala, only 3.6 per cent is hospitalised, out of which 0.7 per cent require oxygen beds and 0.6 per cent require ICU,” she said.
The Kerala Health Department on Thursday informed that the state reported 51,739 new cases of Covid-19, taking the number of active cases to 3,09,489. Ernakulam recorded 9,708 cases, the highest in all the districts of the state, followed by Thiruvananthapuram that logged 7,675 cases.
The state’s Test Positivity Rate (TPR) was 44.6 per cent after 1,16,003 samples were tested in the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, during the Union Health Ministry weekly media briefing on Thursday (January 27), Luv Aggarwal, Joint Secretary said, “Overall case positivity rate across the country was nearly 17.75 per cent during the last week. There are over 50,000 COVID active cases in 11 states, 10,000-50,000 active cases in 14 states and less than 10,000 active cases in 11 states.”
