Sacked Premajayantha says will revert to profession

SLPP MP Susil Premajayantha, who was sacked from his state ministerial portfolio, yesterday said that he considers his removal as a blessing in disguise for his future political career. Commenting to the media as he left the Isurupaya building in Battaramulla, the former State Minister said  that it is the President’s prerogative to remove any Minister and that decision could not be questioned.

He added that his comment to the media when he was buying vegetables at the Delkanda fair could have led to his sacking. “When I said that agriculture had failed and the recent decision making had been faulty, I was speaking on behalf of the people. We were elected by the people and we represent them. I have never entered Parliament from the National List. No Government can correct its faults if those are not pointed out,” he commented.

Observing that free speech is a right of the people, the MP stated that it is difficult to rule a country or take it forward when constructive criticism could not be tolerated. “We saw how highly educated persons, even including professors, vacated their posts recently. This is not a good trend for the country” he added.

The MP said that as a politician he has fulfilled his duties under every President he served. “Certain individuals, who lack qualifications even to become a sanitary labourer, have been given responsibilities in Parliament. They do not understand the value of education,” he commented.

Commenting that losing ministerial portfolios is not a big deal in politics, MP Premajayantha said that he would return to his profession of law.
