United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said the government is burdening the people with taxes upon taxes and it is in the process of searching for money for the next elections.
He said further that the special Goods and Services Tax, VAT and the Authority tax are being revised putting the burden of paying these taxes on the people. The Deputy Leader
also said the Finance Ministry should be ashamed of themselves for levying a 25% tax on a number of funds including the Pension Fund and the Employees Provident Fund by issuing a gazette notification under the Authority Tax.
He was speaking at a meeting with a group of businessmen at his Hyde Place office in Colombo. Wijewardene said people have no way to live today. Prices of goods and services have risen sharply. The Indian Oil Company increased fuel prices. The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) will also increase prices to equal the amounts in the future.
