Kerala Medical College Scam: The bishop of a church in Kerala was stopped from going to the UK at Thiruvananthapuram Airport on Tuesday. According to officials, an investigation is underway into alleged irregularities in a medical college run by the church.
Following the request of the Enforcement Directorate, the authorities stopped Bishop A Dharmaraj Rasalam at the airport located in the capital of Kerala.
The ED is probing the alleged financial irregularities in running the Dr Somerwell Memorial CSI Medical College. This case has come to be known as Karakonam Medical College scam. Hospitals, medical colleges and all other attached institutions are run by the Church of South India or CSI.
Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials later met Raslam and called him for questioning.
A team of the central probe agency had raided the headquarters of CSI South Kerala for allegedly extorting large sums of money from students by promising them medical seats in a church-run hospital.
Father CR Godwin, director of the Christian Education Board, said that the crime branch has already investigated the matter.
“As I said earlier, 25 people have filed cases against the medical college with respect to the capitation fee and the matter was in court. The ED wants to know more about the case. We are happy to clarify that. Looks like they are interrogating the bishop and he is happy to answer his questions. They arrived (on Monday) at 6.30 am and started the raid. They didn’t inform us earlier,” Godwin said.
