Underworld gangster Saman Rohitha Perera alias ‘Pas Podda’ killed and three others were injured when unidentified gunmen came in a van opened fire at them opposite the Gampaha Court complex yesterday noon.
Police said that the injured were admitted to the Gampaha General Hospital. Preliminary investigations have revealed that ‘Pas Podda’ residing in Udugampola and his accomplices had arrived at the court to appear for a case.
The shooting had occurred when Pas Podda came out of the court complex and about to get into his cab.Police said that the shooting is a result of a rivalry between two underworld groups for years.
Perera has been accused of the murder of an under world gangster Asitha in 2005, shooting at prison bus which killed three prison officials and civilian. He was also accused in the murder of a number of individuals involved in gravel trade.
Sources said that ‘Pas Podda’ had sustained serious cerebral injury following the incident and police suspect an underworld gang led by Ganemulle Sanjeewa may have led the attack.
