Casualty management committee to thwart ship disasters - Minister

A casualty management committee has been appointed by the Ports, Shipping and Aviation Ministry to prevent future incidents similar to the X-press Pearl disaster, subject minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told parliament yesterday (30). The Minister made this observation in reply to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa regarding the X-press Pearl incident.

Minister De Silva said the Committee consists representatives from the subject ministry, Foreign Affairs Ministry, Attorney General’s Department, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Coast Guard and the NARA.The Minister observed that the said Committee was appointed as a short-term measure to prevent incidents similar to the X-press Pearl incident in the future.

As a long-term plan, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has sought advice, assistance and facilitation from Australia and Singapore regarding incidents like these, De Silva also said. Minister de Silva also noted that a legal framework is being designed regarding international resolutions to which the country is yet to sign in agreement.
