St. Joseph Vaz, Wennappuwa and Ave Maria Convent, Negombo emerged Best Junior Boys’ and Girls’ champions at the Ritzbury Sir John Tarbet Athletic Junior Championship concluded at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama yesterday.
Joseph Vaz athletes recorded the highest points of 64 while Maris Stella, Negombo (50 points) and St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa (46 points) were placed second and third in the boys’ section.
Meanwhile, Ave Maria Convent, Negombo obtained 68 points to take the Girls’ Championship while Ambagamuwa MMV Udabulathgama with 65 points and Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo with 55 points were in second and third places.
V.P.N. Samadhi from Vijitha MMV Dikwella was adjudged the Best Girls Athlete when she set up an under 15 girls high jump new record with 1.68m. Tharusha Mendis of Lyceum International Wattala was named Best Boys Athlete as he set up an under 15 boys high jump new record with 1.93 m. Shesha Umaya Ratnayake of Lyceum International Wattala won the Best Long Jumper award for winning the under 15 girls long jump with 5.31m. Sansala Himashani of Ambagamuwa MMV Udabulathgama was named best 400m runner.Ambagamuwa MMV Udabulathgama coached by veteran Anura Bandara won the girls relay championship with 21 points while Our Lady of Victories Convent (14 points) was placed second while two schools Dharmapala Vidyalaya Pannipitiya and Carmel Balika Vidyalaya Chilaw were joint third with 13 points each.
St. Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa won boys relay championship with 34 points while Maris Stella Negombo (27 points) and St Sebastian Moratuwa (14 points) were placed second and third.
Meanwhile, under 15 boys age group championship was won by Sir John Kotelawala MV Kurunegala and Maris Stella Negombo were the runner up. Ambagamuwa MMV Udabulathgama won the girls under 15 age group Championship while Lyceum International Wattala was the runner up.
The final day on yesterday another 10 meet records were established by the juniors while overall 16 new meet records and one equal record were set up during the three days. U.M.M.B Uduwelaarachchi of Veheragala MV set up under 14 girls 75 m record with 12.1 seconds at the semi final while M.W.E Shehara of Vijitha MMV Dikwella was set up under 13 girls long jump record with 5.20m. Visha Fernando of St Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa set up under 14 boys 400m record with 53.6 seconds at the semi final.
S.D Hettiarachchi of Dharmaraja Kandy who set up Boys under 12 event 80m new record also set up the 100m record yesterday with 12.5 seconds at the semi finals. I.M Bogoda of Sir John Kotelawala MV Kurunegala set up Boyd under 15 400 m new record with 50.9 seconds while G.D B Bandara of Rangiri Dambulla National school established 10m hurdles under 13 girls new record. V.P.N Samadhi of Dikwella Vijitha MMV set up 1.68m new record in under 15 high jump event while the 4x 100m relay boys new record set up by Maris Stella Negombo team with a time of 3 minutes and 38.8 seconds.
