By Shafiya Nawzer

The 21st edition of Colombo Fashion Week (CFW) recently unfolded at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo. As the curtains fell on day 4, the event concluded successfully, wrapping up a week of fashion-inspired events and runway extravaganzas. Colombo Fashion Week Founder & Managing Director, Ajai Vir Singh, and CFW Director and CEO, Fazeena Rajabdeen showcased their exceptional prowess in putting the event together. While the spectacle appeared glamorous, it's essential to acknowledge the immense hard work and logistical efforts behind the scenes to orchestrate Sri Lanka's most prominent fashion showcase.

Fouzul Hameed

Fouzul Hameed, an eminent figure in men's fashion, brought over thirty years of expertise in tailoring to the Colombo Fashion Week runway with his Summer '24 showcase. In celebration of Hameedia's 75th Anniversary, the collection paid homage to the brand's origins, focusing on ceremonial attire with the foundational colours of black and white. With chic and elegant undertones exuding timeless class, the collection presented by Fouzul Hameed seamlessly blended style, comfort, and sustainability, catering to the needs of contemporary, fashion-conscious urban men. Each garment showcased Fouzul's unparalleled attention to detail, meticulously crafted to accentuate the male form while providing a comfortable fit.

Ayesh Wickramaratne

Ayesh Wickramarathne's 'Zero Hero' collection redefined sustainability, transforming unused fabrics into wearable art. Meticulously crafted using natural treatments and minimal water, each piece showcased clever patternmaking and draping techniques to minimise waste. CFW partnered with Tresemme for the fifth consecutive year, and Ayesh celebrated salon-like hair alongside his creations. While the collection was commendable for its fusion of sarees and prints, some felt that it lacked the standout factor seen in Ayesh's previous work.

Samant Chauhan

Indian designer Samant Chauhan mesmerized the audience with his collection 'Whispers of Spring' at CFW. Drawing inspiration from architecture, history, and travel, Samant paid tribute to his roots in Bhagalpur, India, renowned for its rich silk-weaving tradition. The collection cushioned the birth of newness and the beauty of colour, honouring the delicate elegance of nature itself. Each piece spoke volumes about Samant's profound connection to his heritage and his visionary approach to design.

LOVI Ceylon

Asanka de Mel, the visionary behind LOVI, showcased a collection deeply rooted in Sri Lankan ethos. With 'Bloom by LOVI Ceylon', Asanka incorporated embroidery, handloom, beading, and stitching to reflect his love for the island, its people, and its culture. As Sri Lanka approaches its centennial of Independence in 2048, the collection ignited a spirit of greatness and unity, inspiring Sri Lankans for a grand future. Co-designed with Natharlea Yahampath, the collection served as a tribute to Sri Lanka's vibrant heritage and promising future.

Darshi Keerthisena

Darshi's latest collection for CFW is a masterful showcase of meticulously handcrafted and dyed pieces, adorned with intricate hand-embellishments and embroidery. Paying homage to her late father, Dr. Buddhi Keerthisena, the collection, aptly named 'In My Garden' is a heartfelt tribute that intertwines memories, emotions, and reflections inspired by her father's legacy.

Rooted in the love for craft, where tradition meets innovation, each piece in the collection reflects the dedication of both Darshi and the artisans. Drawing inspiration from the literal garden behind her workshop, Darshi infuses elements of tranquillity and solace into her designs.

Crafted from hand-dyed batik fabrics, every garment is a testament to artisanal skill and creativity. Bold festive colours harmonize with subtle hues, exuding an easy, feminine vibe tailored for contemporary wear. The collection's highlight lies in its batik sarees, featuring intricate designs that evoke the beauty of a garden in bloom, complemented by modern blouses that blend traditional motifs with contemporary cuts.

Noteworthy are the tailored batik blazers, exuding sophistication and elegance, perfect for formal occasions. A poignant moment in the showcase was Darshi's tribute to her father, as she played a video of his cherished memories accompanied by his favourite song, underscoring the emotional depth and personal significance of the collection.

The finale of the 21st edition of Colombo Fashion Week was a captivating showcase of creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage. From Fouzul Hameed's timeless elegance to Darshi Keerthisena's heartfelt tribute, each designer left an indelible mark on the runway. As Colombo Fashion Week continues to evolve, it serves as a platform for Sri Lankan and international designers to push the boundaries of fashion while celebrating the rich tapestry of global cultures.
