Complaints on Lankans recruited for Russia- Ukraine war increase

<p><img src="" alt="Featured Image"></p><p><!-- wp:html --><p>The number of complaints concerning the recruitment of Sri Lankans for the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has increased to 413. </p>
<p>The reported number of complaints has now reached 413, prompting the establishment of a specialised unit, within the Ministry of Defence, to address the issue of human trafficking.</p>
<p>This dedicated unit will function as a centralised resource centre, providing information and assistance to individuals with inquiries related to human trafficking.</p>
<p>Sri Lankan citizens who suspect any illegal recruitment practices are strongly encouraged to report them by contacting the hotline at 011 2 44 11 46.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is investigating allegations involving retired Sri Lankan military personnel being involved in recruitment for the war. </p>
<p>Last week, State Minister of Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya revealed that between 600 and 800 Sri Lankans, mostly former soldiers, have fallen victim to a human trafficking scam that involves sending Sri Lankans to Russia, where they are then dispatched to the frontlines in the ongoing Russian-Ukraine war. </p>
<p>Balasuriya also there are reports that a senior military officer is involved in this racket and it is reported that the authorities are also investigating the possible involvement of several other senior military personnel in this human trafficking racket. </p>
<p>Furthetmore, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed the formation of a delegation to address the situation of Sri Lankans affected by the war. This delegation will include the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, a former Ambassador to Russia and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with plans for a prompt departure to Russia.</p>
