Events in Colombo and North to commemorate war dead

<p><img src="" alt="Featured Image"></p><p><!-- wp:html --><p>A series of events will be held over a period of three days beginning today (17) in the Northern and Eastern regions as well as Colombo to mark the end of war 15 years ago.</p>
<p>There would be two major events-one at Mullivaikkal in the Vanni east and Vavuniya on May 18, the day the military brought back both provinces under government control, to commemorate those who perished during the conflict, sources said.</p>
<p>Secretary General of Amnesty International Agnès Callamard will attend the event at Mullivaikkal where heavy fighting took place during the last phase of offensive operations on the Vanni east front.</p>
<p>The Global Tamil Forum (GTF) has joined the Sangha Sansadaya for a better Sri Lanka and several other groups to commemorate the war dead at Vavuniya Municipal playground between 5 pm to 6.30 pm.</p>
<p>Public are also scheduled to gather near the Buddha statue at Viharamahadevi park on</p>
<p>May 17 at 6 pm to commemorate the war dead. Organisers said that the events were meant to commemorate the victims of the conflict but not a particular group or community.</p>
<p>The Army said that there wouldn't be any victory parade though a commemorative event was to be held at Pelawatte War Memorial close to parliament on May 19.
