Eight deaths have been reported between 21 and 25 May, due to the adverse weather conditions across the island, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.

Among the victims, four women and four men have lost their lives. Seven of the fatalities were attributed to incidents involving fallen trees caused by high winds. Specifically, three women from Puttalam district, one woman from Badulla district and three men from Galle, Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya districts succumbed to such incidents. Additionally, one male individual lost his life in a dinghy accident, as per the DMC's announcement.

Landslide warnings remain in effect for seven districts including Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura. According to the latest data released by the DMC, approximately 45,344 individuals have been affected, with 2,797 houses partially damaged. The Disaster Management Centres have reiterated the availability of 117 hotline for emergency assistance round-the-clock.

Within the jurisdiction of the Colombo Municipal Council, 59 incidents of fallen trees have been reported due to strong winds. Notably, 19 cases occurred within Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo, with most other incidents happening along main roads. The removal of fallen trees is being conducted by the Colombo Municipal Council in collaboration with security forces.

Moreover, the Department of Meteorology issued a warning regarding strong winds on 26 May at 10.30 a.m., valid until 10.30 a.m. on 27 May. The warning applies to the western slopes of the Central Hills, the North Central, South, North Western Provinces and Trincomalee District. Gusty winds of 50-60 kmph are anticipated in these areas, with 30-40 kmph winds expected elsewhere on the island.

Additionally, a red warning has been issued by the Meteorological Department for strong winds and rough seas, owing to the likelihood of heavy rains in the sea area surrounding the island and the Bay of Bengal Sea area due to Cyclone Rimal. This warning is in effect for the next 24 hours. Cyclone Rimal has intensified into a severe storm in the northern Bay of Bengal Sea area, potentially causing very rough sea conditions.

Furthermore, the Irrigation Department has warned of possible flooding in the Kelani River and Kalu Ganga areas due to heavy rains on 26 May. Residents in low-lying areas along these rivers are advised to remain vigilant, as flooding may occur if rainfall exceeds 100 mm.

Lastly, the Ministry of Power and Energy disclosed that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) received over 61,000 complaints of power outages in the past six days (21-26 May), affecting more than 467,500 customers. The Electricity Board is actively working to restore power to all affected customers with continuous efforts from management and service staff.
