About 325 kg of narcotics were destroyed using a new high-powered oven, built at a cost of over Rs 11 million in Vanathavilluwa, Puttalam on Saturday (18), Police announced on Friday (17).

The Police Media Division also stated that, under the direction of the Minister of Public Security and the direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police, a high-powered oven was purchased by the Sri Lanka Police at a cost exceeding Rs 11 million.

The Sri Lanka Navy prepared the site for the oven's installation, with the Sri Lanka Police spending Rs 6.34 million for the preparation. The destruction of the drug stock in the high-powered oven was conducted on Saturday (18) with the participation of Public Security Minister Tiran Alles and Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon.

The Police Media Division also announced that the government previously had to spend a significant amount of money to destroy seized drug stocks due to the lack of a permanent facility for this purpose. As a permanent solution, the oven has been installed on 20 perches of land in the Lactose Garden area of Vanathavilluwa, owned by the STF.

It was noted that due to the expansion of drug raids by all Police stations, the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), the STF and the Sri Lanka Navy, a large number of drugs have been seized. Public accusations that the Police were not destroying seized drugs have been addressed by the destruction of several drug stocks using the oven at the INSEE cement factory in Puttalam in a fully transparent manner.

According to previous legal provisions, narcotics could only be destroyed after the conclusion of legal proceedings. However, under the Poisonous Opium and Dangerous Drugs Amendment Act 2022 No. 41, narcotics can now be destroyed before the conclusion of legal proceedings. Accordingly, 279.591 kg of heroin and 45.654 kg of methamphetamine (ice) have been destroyed in Vanathavilluwa.

A stock of drugs seized from seven Pakistani nationals was also destroyed using this oven. The process requires a temperature between 800 and 1200 degrees Celsius and takes eight hours. Operating the oven for an hour consumes 15 kg of gas and 4 litres of diesel.
