Former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, who was named as the fifth suspect in the suspicious death of 16-year-old Jude Kumar Ishalini, who was serving as a domestic aide at his residence, in 2021, has been released from the case due to lack of evidence.

Bathiudeen and the fourth suspect were released due to insufficient evidence. Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela has ordered charges to be filed against Bathiudeen's wife (the third suspect), father-in-law (the second suspect), and the middleman (the first suspect) who trafficked the victim into domestic servitude.

Jude Kumar Ishalini, who was residing in Dayagama, had been 15 years of age when she was brought to the Rishad Bathiudeen's residence, at Bauddhaloka Mawatha, as a domestic aide in October 2020.

She succumbed to severe burn injuries, while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital. She had been under medical care for 12 days since her admission to the hospital on 3 July 2021.

The Judicial Medical Officer, who conducted the post-mortem concluded that she had been sexually assaulted.

The Colombo South Division Children and Women's Bureau has filed charges against the three suspects on several counts, including cruelty and human trafficking. Testimonies from nearly 20 individuals, autopsy results and evidence gathered by investigating officers indicate that the deceased girl was subjected to abuse.

The Borella Police conducted the initial investigations and later the Colombo South Division Children and Women's Bureau took over the case.
