PM, Opposition Leader congratulate Modi

<p>Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Opposition and SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the victory recorded by his party BJP-led National Democratic Alliance at the Indian elections.</p>
<p>Both the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader said that the victory would further elevate the bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka.</p>
<p>Prime Minister Gunawardena said that the victory at the elections in the world's largest parliamentary democracy was a resounding one. "As a close South Asian neighbour, with deep friendship and strongest ties, Sri Lanka is committed to work together with India to overcome challenges and explore new opportunities for enhancing cooperation for peace and people across the world," he said.</p>
<p>"Sri Lanka looks forward to continuing its long-standing bilateral ties on shared beliefs and principles. Sri Lanka will work with India to overcome challenges and explore opportunities that come to light in the present international situation," he added.</p>
<p>SJB and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa assured Sri Lanka's support to India and suggested that the House should call for granting India a permanent membership of the UN Security Council.</p>
<p>"We are confident that all 225 members of the Sri Lankan Parliament will back this move," he said.</p>
