Two men wielding a fire arm and a manna knife stormed two petrol filling stations at Weweldeniya and Naiwala on the Colombo-Kandy road during the wee hours on December 8 and robbed the day’s collection of nearly Rs.40,000 from the three filling station attendants before escaping, according to two complaints received by the Mirigama and Veyangoda Police stations. According to the complaint made to the Mirigama Police, the two men who arrived at the Weweldeniya filling station in a latest model motorcycle, around 2 a.m. had snatched nearly Rs 20,000 from the gas attendant at knife point and escaped after getting him to kneel. The other attendant at the station had been spared because he had climbed a tree at the time to attend to an electricity problem. Seeing the episode he had raised cries forcing the two robbers to make a quick get away.
The entire drama had been recorded on CCTV cameras installed at the station. Police said the footage showed one man wielding a gun. According to the complaint made to the Veyangoda Police two men on a motorcycle had stormed the filling station at Naiwala and robbed nearly Rs 20,000 each from the gas two attendants at gun point and got away.
Police believe that the same two men were behind both robberies. Police investigations are continuing.
