Discussions are underway to recommence work on the ‘world largest Christmas tree’.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has reportedly intervened to speak to the church.
The project was halted on Wednesday (7), after the Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjit called it a ‘wasteful expenditure’ and said the money should be used instead to build homes for the homeless or to provide scholarships for children.
The comment drew the ire of the public after it was revealed that the monies used on the projected – an estimated 12 million rupees – was from a private sponsorship and not government monies.
Organisers also told the press that the Archbishop had been informed of the project in writing three months ago.
