The newly constructed St. Anthony's Church on the Kachchativu island was vested with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jaffna yesterday (23) by the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne in the presence of the Governor of the Northern Province Reginald Cooray.
The church was constructed by the Sri Lanka Navy
The St. Anthony's Church in Kachchativu has long been the pinnacle of reverence of both Sri Lankan and Indian Catholic devotees and the annual Kachchativu feast held in February is attended by a large number of Sri Lankan and Indian devotees.
It is expected the new church will open a new chapter of reconciliation and bolster the Sri Lankan governments Government path towards accountability for sustainable peace.
Speaking on the occasion, the Bishop of Jaffna, Rev. Dr. Justin Bernard Gnanapragasam said that the newly opened Church in Kachchativu could be declared as the ‘Church of Reconciliation’ as it is open for the reverence of all Sri Lankans from different walks of life.
