The construction of what was hoped would become the ‘world’s largest Christmas Tree’ has been temporarily suspended, Deputy Ports and Shipping Minister Nishantha Muthuhetigama said.
No reason for the temporary suspension has been given as yet.
The suspension comes in the wake of criticism by Archbishop of Colombo, who termed the endeavour ‘wasteful expenditure’, saying the money should be used to build homes for the homeless or to provide scholarships to poor children.
The tree reportedly funded by the Arjuna Ranatunga Welfare Fund and will be built using iron, old wood material, chicken wire mesh and vinyl flowers.
The 325 ft tree was scheduled to be completed by December 22 and displayed for 10 days beginning on Christmas Day.
Labour on the 'World's Tallest Christmas Tree' is reportedly volunteered by Sri Lanka Ports Authority workers.
