The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has initiated raids to detect errant traders selling white sugar higher than the controlled price during the festive season. CAA Chairman Hasitha Thilakaratna said the CAA has received many complaints regarding errant traders who have exploited consumers by selling white sugar above the stipulated price. CAA flying squads recently raided shops in Pettah and nabbed traders who had sold 6,725 kilos of white sugar at higher prices.
Although, the controlled price for 1kg pack of white sugar is Rs. 100, these vendors have sold them at Rs.125, 130 and Rs.138. Chairman Thilakaratna instructed the consumers to be vigilant on traders who engaged in unfair trade practices violating the rules and regulations of the CAA Act during the festive season.
He said random checks will be carried out areas where commercial activities are high during the festive season. Complaints of the violation of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act can be made to the CAA on 0117755481-3 (head office) and 7755455 with the relevant district code.
