The main business of Parliament when it commences its next session is to take action on the Central Bank Treasury Bond issue, Finance State Minister Laksman Yapa Abeywardena said.
“Under these moves, there should be a debate on the Treasury Bond issue in Parliament once the Third Reading of the budget proposal 2017 is completed. The Parliamentary debate will be followed by legal action,” the State Minister said.
State Minister Abeywardena was addressing the media at the Finance Ministry yesterday.
He said that all SLFP parliamentarians are dissatisfied with the Treasury Bond issue and have urged to take prompt action against this issue. “The Treasury Bond issue is a pit of faeces,” he said. He refuted allegations that the government is going to prorogue Parliament aiming to sidestep the Treasury Bond issue. Parliament sessions will never be postponed on this issue since the President will not give his approval to it.
The State Minister speaking on holding the local government elections, said that the stance of the SLFP is to hold the elections soon. Accordingly, the SLFP Parliamentary group has taken a decision to take necessary measures to hold the local government election promptly once the delemination process is completed. The President has advised Local Government Minister Faiszer Musthapa to hold the election as soon as possible and to take measures to rectify any shortcomings in the process of holding the election. However, he forecast that it will be around next June when elections will be possible since there is a long process to be completed( for the election).
